ショウジョウバエを５０年以上、約１４００世代にわたって真っ暗な中で飼い続けると、姿や生殖行動などに変化が起きることが、京都大の研究でわかった。
生物の進化の謎を実験によって解き明かす初の成果として注目を集めそうだ。横浜市で開かれる日本分子生物学会で９日発表する。
１９５４年、理学部動物学教室の森主一(しゅいち)教授（２００７年２月死去）が、暗室でハエの飼育を開始。以来、歴代の教員や学生らが、遺伝学の実験用に代々育ててきた。
暗室のハエは、においを感じる全身の感覚毛が約１０％伸びて、嗅覚(きゅうかく)が発達。互いをフェロモンの違いで察知して繁殖し、通常のハエとは一緒に飼ってもほとんど交尾しなくなっていた。
全遺伝情報を解読した結果、嗅覚やフェロモンに関する遺伝子など、約４０万か所でＤＮＡ配列の変異が見つかった。視覚にかかわる遺伝子の一部も変異していたが、光には敏感に反応するので視覚はあるらしい。ショウジョウバエの寿命は約５０日。１４００世代は、人間なら３万～４万年に相当するという。
阿形清和・京大教授は「通常とは異なる環境で世代を重ねることで、まず嗅覚などの感覚器官に差が生まれ、それが生殖行動に影響し、やがて種の分化につながっていくと推測できる」と話している。
