A Study on Shohei Imamura by Donald Richie
Today legendary critic Donald Richie passed away. He always had such a gentle and sweet tone to his work which I loved. The true love for film and the filmmakers he covered really came through in his writing. To remember Richie I wanted to bring up from my digital archives, his short study on another legend Shohei Imamura.
I wish I had a better copy I could find but hopefully this enough for you to get a sense of what he was so great at: talking about film. Imamura made some of the most challenging and complex films ever and Richie is able to explain them and the culture in which they were made, it really is something. I hope you enjoy.

ついで佐木隆三の小説『復讐するは我にあり』の映画化を巡ってのエピソード。
この夏（1978年）から、久し振りに映画を撮ろうかと今、脚本を書いているのだが、原作者の佐木隆三氏に、先だって１年ぶりに会った。40そこそこだろうが、ずっと若く見える体格の良い人だ。２年前、原作の映画化権を取得するについて少々ごたごたがあり、佐木氏も私も嫌な目に遭ったことがある。その最中だったと思うが、銀座から新宿に向うタクシーの中で「今村さん、ちょっとこれを預かって下さい」と、いきなり外した眼鏡を渡して寄越した。何事かと驚くと、これから行くバーに、今度の揉めごとについての仕掛け人が居るはずです。私は断固、奴を殴りますが、向うも黙っちゃいないでしょう、乱闘になれば眼鏡は邪魔ですからという。眉尻のつり上がった彼の横顔は、ケンカの大好きな若者のようであった。（中略）
そのバーには、アングラ芸術家という感じの男女多数の客が居り、突入した佐木氏の知り合いも居るらしく、やあやあと挨拶があったが、目指す仕掛け人は居なかったようで、何事も起きなかった。
この時殴ってやろうとした仕掛け人は、おそらく内田栄一だろう。アングラ演劇の劇団を主宰していた。『吠え王オホーツク』などの作品があり、当時私も彼の芝居をいくつか見ていた。その舞台の前後で内田が、いま『復讐するは我にあり』の映画化権を巡って佐木隆三と争っていると言っていた。何でも佐木は内田に映画化権を与えると言っていたのに、他のやつに渡そうとしているから、抗議をしているのだと言う。
いや、小さな小さな劇団をやっと維持している内田に映画化権を渡すというのは、常識的にありえないだろうと、その時考えたことを憶えている。内田のライバルは今村昌平だったのだ。

janus films has a new 35mm print of my favorite godard film, week end (1967). they also have a poster for its release. likely, this will be showing up as a criterion release sometime next year (thus becoming the only proper release as the new yorker video dvd has long been oop). also, the best news of all, the print is coming to chicago in novemeber. it will be showing at the gene siskel, opening on the 18th.
